Information technology hardware, once uncommon and expensive, has become prevalent in the modern office. Practically no business today can survive without the intense and widespread use of such devices as microcomputers, printers, copier&, scanner&, facsimile terminals, etc. They are used to dramatically increase productivity in preparing storing and sending documents, and as platforms for interpersonal and man-machine communication. The advent and maturity of network technologies and applications also contributed to the diffusion of such equipment, and to its increasing use by nonspecialists.Naturally, this proliferation, which changed the office environment, also brought some challenges, in terms of quality and performance. As technology evolves, users demand more sophistication from the media used to communicate facts and ideas. The acceptance of ideas and arguments, and the ability to properly communicate them, is strongly related to the graphic and plastic quality of the respective documents. ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 28, Office equipment, is the standards body responsible for the development of normative took for the appraisal of such quality and performance aspects within ISO/IEC JTC 1.
