A Group 1 spring milling wheat with yields to rival top winter varieties, as well as outstanding disease resistance, could be the surprise winner on the new HGCA 2011-12 Recommended List. Mulika, marketed by Senova, is suitable for late autumn and spring planting and has out-yielded Solstice in late autumn-drilled trials. That puts it just below current Group 1 winter wheat leader, Gallant, and well ahead of spring favourite, Paragon, says Jim McVit-tie, HGCA Recommended List manager. "When planted in late autumn, it is 6% higher yielding than Paragon and it's 9% higher when spring-sown." It also offers orange wheat blossom midge resistance, which is a first for Group 1 and it has a rating of seven for Septoria tritici. Grain quality is good, too, with Hagberg, protein and specific weight all high and milling industry support is encouraging, says Dr McVittie. Three years of Nabim testing show quality is at least as good as Paragon, he notes.
