Efficient sheep producers should be making a profit but current prices don't leave a huge margin, says consultant Lesley Stubbings. "Far too few producers know their cost of production and a significant proportion are not making a true profit, even though they think they are." Many of these could be profitable but need to cost their enterprises realistically. "You can't answer the questions unless you know what the strengths and weaknesses are and you can't get to those without costings." Properly calculated rearing percentages are a good place to start, says Ms Stubbings. "These should not simply be based on how many lambs and ewes were turned out. Start with how many were put to the ram and include any that were sold."
