The British Mastitis Conference, organised by the Institute for Animal Health, produced a sell-out with some 180 delegate when it was held at Garstang, Lancashire. There is an increasing awareness that mastitis in dairy cattle is a painful conditionand pain control measures should be part of any treatment protocols, Solihull veterinary surgeon, Steve Borsberry told the conference. Furthermore control of pain meant 'happier' cows, which in turn meant happier farm staff, he said. Mr Borsberry said: "A reduction in the number of farm staff and changes to milking routines may lead to bacterial infections and inflammation etting well established before the mastitis is recognised."
