PROCESSING OPTIONS FOR BROILER LITTER

The recycling of broiler litter into feedstuffs for cattle is a responsible step in the direction of sustainable agriculture. Researchers at the University of Alabama are investigating ways of producing a palatable end-product. Poultry production continues to increase each year on a worldwide basis, with concomitant increases in generation of waste products. Most broilers are reared in houses with dirt floors and bedded with an inexpensive fibrous material (e.g. wood shavings, peanut hulls, rice hulls). The poultry house is generally cleaned out on a per annum basis and the broiler litter, consisting of the bedding material, excreta from the birds, spilled feed, feathers, and some foreign material, must be removed.
