Organic electroluminescent (EL) devices using tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)-gallium complex (Gaq3) as the emitting layer were developed. Results indicated that EL devices using Gaq3 as emitting layers emitted light at a peak wavelength of 540 nm. The maximum luminance of these devices was obviously higher than that of devices using Alq3 and Znq2 as emitting layers prepared with the same structures and under the same conditions as Gaq3. The greatest maximum luminance of Gaq3 devices was attributed to the higher breakdown voltage and quantum efficiency than those of the other two devices. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
