Milk production vies with pedigree stock sales as the key enterprise in the award-winning Ingleview herd of Robert and Elaine Butterfield of Lingaw Farm, Bentham, North Yorkshire - the 2004 winners of the Holstein UK's Premier Herd of the Year award.A family farming business with one full-time employee, the cow man, Andrew Dawson, the farm covers 330 acres, all Less Favoured Area, and lying around 550ft above sea level. The farm is mostly heavy clay land and is all down to permanent or long-term pasture. Although the size of the milking herd, about 90 to 100 milkers, has increased a little over recent years, Mr Butterfield says that it has, and is likely to, remain relatively stable.
