The lifts (elevator) industry has two main areas of activity: it is concerned on one hand with the production and installation of new equipment in new or existing buildings and, on the other, with the maintenance and modernization of the equipment already installed. Philippe Lamalle, Chair of TC 178, that oversees international standardization for the field, looks at where International Standards come into the picture, and at the new upward thrust of activity of TC 178.
