Quality grass vital for efficient milk production

Cumbrian dairy farmer David Quayle believes quality grass is critical when it comes to efficient milk production and to this end bases both grazing and silage leys on the latest British-bred varieties. Farming at 280-acre Moor Dyke, at Aikton, near Wigton foi the past 20 years, Mr Quayle has built up a business that now suppor ts 160 Holsteins that average over 10,000 litres a cow. Further progress will depend to some extent on even greater returns from home grown forage so the maintenance of productive swards and continued utilisation of the best grass breeding developments - including high sugar grasses - will be key.
