Proliferation of symbols causes confusion as to what they mean - which is precisely what they set out to avoid. At a time when it is crucial to provide instant understanding of safety messages worldwide - a task that the visual, language-independent power of the graphical symbol is the best instrument to convey - the need for one clear and unambiguous set of safety signs is key to ensuring the safety message is properly understood. ISO's standard for safety signs, ISO 7010, irons out the problem by clearly defining one set of safety signs for one use internationally, and its adoption and implementation will go in the direction of better worldwide comprehension.
