Taking image compression into the new millennium/JPEG 2000, a new standard to enrich imaging applications

The prime motivator for the familiar JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) standard was the need in the videotex services which developed into the Internet for an efficient way to comprss high quality photographic images. When the standard was developed, the envisaged state of the art was an IBM PC/AT running at 8 MHz and the possibility of ISDN connections running at 64 khit/s. Times have moved on, and with 300 times the processor speed and an order of magnitude improvement in users communications expectations, it is hardly surprising that the JPEG committee considered that its standard was due for a revamp.
