The use of cobalt in rations has become a spotlight of attention following the publication of Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 as amended by Regulation (EC) No. 790/2009. replacing Directives 67/548/EC and 1999/45/EC and their amendments regarding the classification, packaging and labelling of dangerous substances and preparations respectively. The new legislation, effective by 1 December 2010 for substances and by 1June 2015 for mixtures, has assigned a hazard classification for all cobalt salts currently authorised as additives for use in animal feeds (under Regulation (EC) No. 1831/2003) as potentially carcinogenic by inhalation. Mixtures containing 10Omg cobalt per kg or more will be similarly classified. Such classification requires packages to carry a skull and crossbones hazard warning label.
