THE EU FEED INDUSTRY - REVIEW OF 2010

FEFAC, the representative body of the European animal feed industry, updated its statistical review of the industry in June on the occasion of its Annual General Meeting. Feed production fell back to close to 150 million tonnes after the fallout fromthe banking crisis of 2007-08 and the impact of sky-high raw material costs. Germany claimed the top producer spot from France; these two countries, traditionally the Ell's largest producers, could soon see their preeminence threatened by Spain, althoughthe latter has experienced two years of contraction where feed production is concerned. Meanwhile, the EU's latest members continue to adapt their livestock economies and their feed industries to EU realities. In particular Poland's feed industry has grown since EU accession at a particularly rapid rate but has a product mix which may surprise industry observers; Roger Dean has been delving into the data.
