Avery good friend of mine was recently ordained as a deacon in the Catholic Church, and we were fortunate to be invited to the ceremony. His accomplishment represented the culmination of four years of work to complete the educational program. One of the early parts of the process required my friend and his wife to sit with the archbishop of the diocese for an interview. It is important to note that my friend is a high-ranking officer in a metropolitan fire department currently finishing his 30th year of service. He has been tremendously successful in his career, having come up through the ranks. He recalls a time when, as a rookie, he privately hoped that, before retirement, he might make it to lieutenant. Suffice it so say, he eclipsed that goal a long time and five promotions ago.
