When a never-before-seen type of stem rust showed up on wheat in Central Africa in 1999, many were left scratching their heads. Ten years later researchers from all over the world are finally making strides toward finding resistance genes for Ug99. Inthe fourth-annual update of its Research and Development pipeline, Monsanto announced that its first generation drought-tolerant corn has moved to the fourth and final phase before an anticipated market launch early in the next decade. The company alsohas submitted the product to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for regulatory clearance.
