Holly Hill plant visit

One of the more unlikely enterprises to be found at a cement manufacturing plant must be the Holly Hill Lumber Company of South Carolina. Founded in 1927 by two local businessmeh, by 1964 it had become a major regional player in the timber industry, owning over 110,000 acres of land (44,500 ha). Amongst that acreage was a site in Holly Hill that contained an easily mined marl, well suited to the manufacture of cement. In 1966, a single 12ft (3.7m) diameter wet kiln and two finish mills were built, creating a cement plant with a capacity of 350,000short tons (st)/year (318,000 metric tonnes/year). Trading under the name of the Santee Portland Cement Company, the plant installed a third finish mill in 1973, followed by a second kiln line in 1974. This new kiln, 18ft 6 in (5.6m) in diameter, and 580ft (176.8m) long, tripled production capacity to 1.2Mst/year (1.1 Mt/ year). In 1978 Santee Portland was purchased by the Dundee Cement Company, which installed a fourth finish mill system, in 1982. By 1988, Dundee Cement had formed a partnership with Safety Kleen Corporation to process waste materials into recycled fuel for the kilns, at a purpose built, on-site facility. The present ownership commenced in 1990, when the Dundee Cement Company and Ideal Basic Industries were merged into Holnam Inc. - renamed Holcim (US) in 2002.
