After trying everything he thought was practical to increase corn and soybean yields with the single 30-inch crop rows traditionally used in the Midwest, Central Illinois grower Mark Sauder came to believe that the productive potential of his 2,300acres was being limited only by plant crowding. "It wasn't because of compaction or fertility or any of those reasons," says the farmer from Cissna Park, 111. He had heard about work being done in 20-inch rows, but recognized that along with a new planter, he'd also need a new corn head because most harvesting equipment, including his, is designed for 30-inch rows.
