VS is developing a National Brucellosis Elimination Zone plan for the Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA). Brucellosis-infected wildlife, primarily elk, in the GYA have been implicated in the transmission of brucellosis to cattle herds in the GYA in the past 4 years. Fever Tick - The Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program has been battling increased tick infestations in the permanent quarantine zone in Texas. These have caused an increased spillover of infestations into the free zone. Appropriated fundinglevels were budgeted to cover routine maintenance of the program but have not been adequate to cover the increased activities necessary to fight the new infestations. Contingency funds were made available to the program to augment the existing levels ofappropriated funding in the face of the incursions. This funding has been used to hire additional temporary animal health technicians and purchase the minimal equipment necessary to support them and purchase additional quantities of acaracides to treat livestock and wildlife vectors in the permanent and temporary quarantine zones.
