Fertility issues and fertilizer management in rice-wheat system

In Pakistan productivity of rice-wheat system is quite poor and there is a declining trend in yield. Several factors are responsible for poor productivity. Rice-wheat is a nutrient- exhaustive system and has resulted in nutrient imbalances. Moreover,nutrient use for the major crops is highly imbalanced in favor of N. There is strong evidence that the crop yield in the system can be improved through judicious management of fertilizers. This article reviews the characteristics and nutrient status of soils, fertility issues and their management and fertilizer use efficiency in rice-wheat system.
