Selective Nor-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) is a popular technique for NOx control in the cement industry. This article suggests that fuel-lean reburn can be at least as effective in lowering NOx emissions, but with lower costs. Improved kiln combustion atmosphere with increased mixing of kiln gases is a crucial first step. Fuel-lean reburn can be an effective method of controlling kiln NOx emissions by injecting traditional fuels such as oil and natural gas into the oxidising zone at the back end of the kiln. In this location, the fuel-lean reburn molecules break down into hydrocarbon fragments such as .CH and .CH2 and these hydrocarbons react with NOx to produce N_2.
