The Mason Station power plant in Wiscasset, Maine, once a key supplier of electricity for Maine, may become a major storage and shipping point for cement transported by barge to Newington, N.H., and Boston. Dragon Products Co. says it plans to acquire the 1940s-era plant and the surrounding 57 acres that include a 750-foot-long dock with deepwater access on the Sheepscot River. Dragon is negotiating with FPL Energy, which acquired Mason Station in 1999 from Central Maine Power. With two of its five generators off line, the plant now serves as a reserve power source, according to Al Wiley, director of regulatory affairs for FPL Energy. Last year, Mason Station was in use for just five days, and this year it has not been used at all. "We decided to sell it because the consumers don't have much of a need for it anymore," Wiley said.
