Spoilage of stored grains due to biological activity (heating caused by insects and molds, commonly known as "hot spots") remains a management challenge at commercial grain facilities.Monitoring the condition of thousands or millions of bushels of grain is a difficult task. While thermocouple- or thermistorequipped cables remain the industry standard for measuring the temperature of stored grain, additional technologies are being investigated that could provide the grain storage industry with additional tools for the detection of spoilage.
