Taiheiyo closes plants to adjust to 30% demand fall

Taiheiyo Cement Corp. has announced that it will stop cement production at three plants by September 2010 to reduce its annual group production capacity by 3.1 Mt. or some 13%. The company expects to book 165m US dollars in valuation losses on the production halt at the plants in Kochi, Oita and Saitama prefectures for the 2009 fiscal year. The three facilities also produce limestone and other products. Taiheiyo. the largest Japanese cement producer, has estimated its cement production capacity to be about 30 % more than justified by domestic cement demand, which has slackened on declines in housing and public works.
