Heavy-Duty Diesel Piston and Cylinder Liner Overview

The article in the previous issue of Engine Professional (Jan-Mar 2016) on the topic of "Piston Designs in Heavy Duty Diesels" sparked some questions as to specific engine designations associated with the various piston designs. An attempt to prepare a comprehensive listing of piston designs for each of the many industrial engines in service today would be a difficult assignment, but the list below is a segment of some "mainstream" Caterpillar engines for your reference. We also address some of the other basic design details for these engines that may be of interest.
