NGFA biosecurity document: new publication targets security improvements at grain handling facilities

This article is based on a presentation by Robert Smigelski, ag group operations manager for The Andersons Inc., Maumee, OH (419-893-5000/www.andersonsinc.com), and chairman of the National Grain and Feed Association's Biosecurity Task Force. He spoke in December at the 2001 NGFA Country Elevator Council meeting in Indianapolis, IN. The NGFA's Biosecurity Task Force on Nov. 16 published a white paper titled Agribusiness Facility and Operations Security, which Outlines security issues and considerations that may need to be addressed in some grain-handling, feed manufacturing, and processing facilities. The Biosecurity Task Force is made up of individuals representing grain elevators, grain processors, feed mills, transportation companies, law enforcement, and government agencies. Their paper contains a general list of guidelines to help managers pinpoint areas for improvement within their facilities. While it is not a substitute for an emergency action plan, the white paper is designed to enhancethat plan.
