Evaluation of immunoglobulin concentration in colostrum of mares by ELISA, refractometry and colostrometry.

Three methods, ELISA, refractometry and colostrometry, were evaluated for analysis of IgG concn. in mare colostrum. 360 colostrum and 36 blood samples obtained from mares in the postpartum period were evaluated. A high degree of correlation was observed between the results of ELISA tests and both colostrometry and refractometry assays (P < 0.0001). Immediately post partum, colostrum from primiparous mares had higher IgG concn. than that from multiparous mares. However, at this stage, the mean colostral vol. of multiparous mares was much greater than that of primiparous mares (1020 vs 527 ml), meaning that total amounts of IgG in their colostrum were also higher (48.5 vs 31.5 g). No correlations were observed between IgG concn. in colostrum and blood.
