A simple method for teaching myringotomy and ventilation tube insertion.

While myringotomy with ventilation tube insertion is a simple procedure associated with low morbidity, mentors face limitations in teaching its subtleties to new residents. Surgical techniques, especially those that require fine dexterity, are best learned through reinforced repetition. However, in the operating room, residents have a limited amount of time and a limited number of attempts to insert a ventilation tube without causing local irritation, bleeding, or harm to the patient. Temporal bones have been used for training, but their availability is limited, and their cost may be prohibitive.
