LIGHTENING THE LOAD: Dealerships are restructuring services to help farmers with data overload

YOUR growers know that sitespecific agriculture (SSA) means collecting all types of data from their fields. But do they know the benefits of collecting all this data, and do they have a plan for integrating and interpreting it? As Ted Macy, vice president, crop production systems, Agris Corp., Roswell, GA, explains, "It's a whole new ballgame. Our customers will have three to four times as many customers using yield monitors and gathering yield data in 1997 than last fall. They'll start to look at variability in the fields." Having the right equipment and staffing is vital to helping customers make sense of the reams of field data. How will all this come together? Dealer/managers will play a key role in helping customers implement precision farming. They already help customers collect data through yield monitoring and grid sampling. The challenge for 1997 will be managing the mounds of data.
