Up until as recently as two years ago, reflective coatings were the primary choice of value added glass products in the commercial glass market. Architects chose reflective coatings for their colors, appearance and solar performance. Low-emissivity (low-E) coatings were typically used only in more extreme climates where high-visibility light transmission was required with low insulating U-values.Today, the ratio comparing reflective coatings to low-E coatings has reversed, causing reflective coatings to make up less of the production mix. For Viracon, low-E coated insulating products make up 70 percent of sales volume and high-performance reflective coatings make up 30 percent.
