In this issue, we will explore failure of a set of Socket Head Cap Screws used to secure the telescoping hydraulic lifting cylinders of a Dump Truck. Seventeen total pieces were received, which included only three Socket Heads. These facts indicated that all of the fractured items were not able to be recovered and submitted for analysis. The Cap Screws were identified as 5/8-18 UNRF Class 3A Cap Screws. The Cap Screws were grouped according to the type of failure and labeled by the lab for tracking purposes as Samples A through R. Figure 1 and Figure 2 show several of the received samples.
