Business owners, architects and building contractors are paying greater attention to the age-old challenge of 'designing in, security and 'designing out crime' without sacrificing aesthetics As one architect put it, "we are faced with the difficult job of communicating something inspirational when in fact there is the architectural equivalent of a bulletproof vest behind the facade."According to a recent two-year independent study commissioned by the U.S. Postal Service, the commission found that in examining work-related homicides involving guns for workers in all major industries, the retail trade had the highest rate at 2.10 per 100,000 workers. Public administration including law enforcement came in at 1.66 per 100,000 workers. The commission also found that homicide rates were highest for taxi drivers and chauffeurs at 31.54 per 100,000 followed by law enforcement personnel at 6.46 per 100,000.
