GUNNAR MYRDAL'S FAMOUS 1968 book Asian Dramawas subtitled An Inquiryinto the Poverty of Nations.That Swedish economist'sdrama was about overpopulation, povertyand the danger of what we now call "failedstates." Today's Asian drama is an inquiryinto the prosperity of nations, and intowhat happens when several big neighbor-ing countries become prosperous at thesame time. They have done so in a processthat is associated less with Myrdal's ideasthan with those of the man with whom heshared the Nobel Prize for Economics in1974, Friedrich Hayek, an Austrian econo-mist who became the intellectual idol ofMargaret Thatcher.
