Cameo has several advantages but one is more important than the rest. Since the early to mid-1990's dessert apple growers have recognised the risk of relying too heavily on Cox, hence the increased popularity of Gala and more recently Braeburn. But as these are produced in substantial volumes worldwide they have inevitably become commodity varieties and so, despite the better taste of the English versions, they now command little or no premium. So are there better alternatives to augment Cox? Two Kent growers believe the answer is Cameo and its European licensee Pepiniere du Valois agrees. This is because it will not be over-produced as orchard area is controlled through the Cameo Club and it is marketed by a limited number of selling desks in Europe including Norman Collett, alone in the UK.
