Nature or nurture?

Nature designed pigs to live out of doors, so why do we house them? All commercial pig production has but one common purpose - the cheapest method of producing one kilo of pig meat. Whilst genetics plays its part, the genetic potential of the pig cannot be expressed without the best environment. Housing is firstly required to improve the performance of the pig and provide improvements on their otherwise natural outdoor surroundings.
