Drought-resistant and versatile, cassava offers dependable harvests for subsistence farmers, writes John Madeley. Displaced by wide unemployment, thousands of Thailand's urban workers are returning to their rural roots, Since the Asian economic crisis, an estimated two million Thais, mainly in Bangkok and other large cities, have been forced to seek alternative livelihoods. Most have returned to their hometowns to be absorbed by local labour markets, and many have turned to farming.
