Artificial insemination (AI) is becoming more popular in pig farming. Keith Thornton looks at the techniques of estrus detection and insemination methods. The main advantages of AI are genetic access to improved boars; better protection for herd health; improved herd management; and safer insemination of smaller females. AI makes economic sense as well, with significant savings recorded over buying boars for natural service. (Table 1).
