With organic seed quality remaining an issue in some circumstances, the latest developments to evaluate and optimise seed treatments - plus the latest regulations regarding organic seed usage - were two subjects featured at the recent Organic Vegetable Variety Open Day, sponsored by the HDRA and NIAB. Sue Jupe reports. EC regulations that seeds used in organic vegetable production should be produced organically did not come into force in January this year. With doubts that all member states could guarantee sufficient availability of organic seed of suitable varieties by this deadline, the derogation has remained in place. However, the Commission stipulated that species where adequate numbers of varieties are available as organic seed should appear on an Annex.
