Tory MP for Faversham and Mid-Kent Hugh Robertson said the overtly environmental direction of Defra and its 'gold-plating' of European Commission regulations must change. "There is no doubt the amount of regulations in farming coming out of Defra after having 'gold-plated' the original regulation from Brussels is quite unparalleled anywhere in the world," he said on his way to last week's party conference in Bournemouth. He agreed with his leader Michael Howard that one way to cut back Defra's 'bureaucratic meddling' was to cut back Defra itself.
