The papaya is one of the Philippines' most valuable crops. Abundant all over the country and available throughout the year, the country ranks eighth in world papaya trade. FIGURES FROM THE Bureau oT Agricultural Statistics show that in 2008 the domestic papaya production area in the Philippines totalled 9,175 hectares and produced 182,907 tonnes from 5.67mn bearing trees. The main plantation is located on the SOCCSKARGEN (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City) region followed by Northern Mindanao, CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), Davao and Bicol.
