The world's major manufacturers are unveiling next year's models, as well as modifications to existing tractors. Michael Williams looks at what's on offer. The number of companies in the tractor industry has been shrinking steadily as competition forces more manufacturers out of the market or into mergers or takeover deals, and the news that a well established company is moving into tractor production for the first time is unusual. The new arrival is the Claas company, which is based in Germany and is one of the leading manufacturers of harvesting machinery. Two years ago Claas announced the development of a new type of tractor called the Xerion, and it has recently been announced that limited production will begin in 1996.
