Traffic accidents in rural area and assist system for traffic safety

An investigation was made into the causative factor of traffic accidents arose at a clear intersection in the rural area from the viewpoint of visual search functions. It has been shown by the results that it is difficult for the drivers to detect the vehicle running on the colliding coarse because this vehicle remains the same position in the driver's visual field. Two systems are introduced in order to assist drivers visual search. The one is a system by means of image processing technique. The other utilizes DGPS (differential global positioning system) and IVC (inter-vehicle communication) techniques. This paper presents the development of the assist system.
