Peer reviewing and publishing: The yin and yang of academia

The British Journal of Dermatology (BJD) is currently celebrating 125 years since its launch in 1888. Over the last 100 years, the BJD has evolved into one of the world's premier dermatology journals. In the August editorial I reflected on how mis enduring success has been achieved and maintained. This month's editorial focuses on the day-to-day running of the journal and its peer review system. Peer review was described by the former editor of the BMJ as 'a flawed process at the heart of science and journals'.1 hi spite of this jaundiced view, peer review remains the gold standard for evaluation of scientific papers. It is therefore incumbent upon the BJD's editorial team to make this process as flawless as possible.
