Vigilance key to IPM success, Grower Day audience told

Maryland flower growers are finding their time — and investments — well spent in using biological controls. That was one of the messages Stanton Gill, a regional specialist with the Cooperative Extension department of the University of Maryland, brought to the third annual Grower Day hosted by Greenhouse Canada. Training growers to scout for pests is important, "though when it gets busy, they won't spend as much time on it," said Gill. About half of the Maryland growers he's worked with now use professional scouts. "They're not telling them how to grow (the crop), they're just advising them on the pests."
