Millions of cuttings are made from stock plants for commercial production each year. Many of these stock plants are patented varieties... but how many of the propagators are licensed? Unauthorized propagation of patented plant varieties is harmful tothe floriculture industry, and ultimately the consumer. "Propagating any patented variety without a valid licence is illegal," said Warren Banner, general manager for Ball FloraPlant. "This type of fraud hurts everyone in the business because it undermines new product development. The widespread problem of under-reporting the number of cuttings propagated is just as damaging."
