Fish and veggies in growers' recipe for business succes: future Aqua Farms in Nova Scotia combines research with food production
Greenhouse partner Dave Roberts checks the slender burpless hybrids dangling from their vertical swags and smiles. He runs his hands through the leafy thickness of the herb beds, using sight, touch and smell to make sure his plants are sufficiently nourished. Then he takes a few steps, reaches for a shovelful of pellets, and feeds his fish. It's all in a day's work at this aquaponics operation which could change how we colder climate types get fresh produce. For about a year, Dave and his business partner Carla MacQuarrie have raised tilapia -- a tropical food fish -- in symbiotic harmony with hydroponic beds of vegetables and herbs. It's a project that to date has proven to be good for the environment and great for business.
