Sampling the Breeders Variety Showcase

The annual California trials are the breeder's showcase for displaying their new varieties, hopefully in the most favorable light compared with those of their competitors. There aren't many new varieties from seed-propagated material, continuing a trend that started just a few years ago. Ten years ago seed varieties would have been the norm, but now varieties are mostly vegetative. However, that said, I do see more attention by breeders to develop new lines of seed-propagated material that performs as well as the vegetative propagated material.
