Nearly three-dozen farmers in the neighborhood of Chualar Creek south of Salinas are working together to minimize the agricultural chemicals and sediment carried from their land, to the creek and then downstream to Monterey Bay. Some of these farmersturn fields that are fallow in the winter into retention ponds to slow down storm water runoff. Others have huilt sediment basins to keep soil and chemicals on the farm. And nearly all of them are using a field soil test to make their applications of fertilizer more precise.
