California grower's herbicide buyers guide: growers pick glyfos as California's top herbicide

By an overwhelming margin, growers of California's fruit, vegetable, nut and field crops turn to products containing Glyphosate as the active ingredient in the herbicides they use. And topping the Glyphosate products are those coming from Monsanto tinder the brand name Roundup. Indeed, seven of the top 25 herbicides identified by Rincon Publishing's MKTBLDR database of chemical usage in California contain Glyphosate. Those products accounted for 3.7 million acres of crops treated during 2000, the most recent year for which data is available. Herbicide usage varies greatly from crop to crop in California, with almonds and cotton each ranking high among the crops surveyed for usage. The top five herbicides used in cotton growing accounted for 1.4 million treated acres. Almond growers used their top five products on 1.0 million acres. (acres may equal more than the total number of acres grown in the state because of multiple applications.)
