Studying ways to optimize control of greenhouse climate

The surface temperature of leaves is often 4°C lower than air temperature, according to researchers at the Greenhouse and Processing Crops Research Centre. Optimizing the management of climate inside greenhouses is a difficult task for greenhouse producers. Temperature, relative humidity, light levels, air movement and carbon dioxide concentration have to be manipulated in response to changing outside weather and crop requirements to maintain high productivity without excessive use of energy. Furthermore, the climate has to be manipulated to avoid conditions favourable to the development of diseases and pests.
