Sampling what's new in '97 from the California Pack Trials

We characterized the 1996 California Pack Trials (July 1996) as a showcase of the breeders' efforts to perfect a certain variety or series. Also, we said that most of the work was directed to developing good quality seed that will deliver a transplantable plug. Greenhouse production this season proved the commitment of seed companies in delivering healthy transplantable plugs with high germination rates. For quite a few years, I voiced my dissatisfaction with some seed quality, but this past season I noticed a big leap in the delivery of higher quality seed. And more importantly, whenever a small lot of seed or variety is not up to the higher expected standards, the breeders and brokers are taking speedy, corrective measures.
